New Village Arts is Carlsbad's professional nonprofit theatre, founded in 2001 by a group of Actors Studio Drama School graduates. Since 2006 it has lived in the old Bauer Lumber Building in the heart of Carlsbad Village, reopened after renovation in 2023 as the Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center. Its mainstage season of plays and musicals runs on the intimate 100-seat Ray Charles Stage in the Conrad Prebys Theatre, while the White Family Next Stage — a flexible room with bar service — carries the rest of the calendar: stand-up and comedy nights, drag showcases, improv, magic, jazz and salsa parties, and spoken word. NVA welcomes more than 30,000 visitors a year and runs education, fellowship and community programs alongside its productions.
