The Balboa Theatre is a 1,339-seat historic theatre in downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, at Fourth Avenue and E Street. It opened in 1924 as a vaudeville and cinema house — William Wheeler's design is known for its tiled dome and ornate plaster fretwork — became Teatro Balboa in the 1930s, ran as a movie house until the mid-1980s, and reopened in 2008 after a $26.5 million restoration funded by the City of San Diego. Operated by San Diego Theatres, it books touring standup and comedy alongside concerts, dance, opera, family shows and the Silent Movie Mondays screening series with live accompaniment. Recent comedy bills include Chelsea Handler, Ilana Glazer, Daniel Sloss, Bassem Youssef, Adam Ray, Dusty Slay, Jonathan Van Ness, Brincos Dieras and Dustin Nickerson.
