The Velveeta Room has been Austin's longest-running comedy club since 1988, when owners Shannon Sedwick and Michael Shelton (founders of Esther's Follies) took over a former 6th Street strip club and handed the room to the comics. It moved to its current home at 521 E 6th Street in 1993, into the old Sun Theater, and the mirrors from the original room still hang in the showroom. Named for Ronnie Velveeta, the lounge-lizard character created by Texas comedy legend Kerry Awn, "The Velv" is a small, intimate downtown room with a full bar that runs stand-up six nights a week — Austin All-Stars showcases, Powerbomb, Cocktails and Comedy and The Hump alongside touring headliners. Comics who cut their teeth on the stage include Devon Walker, Andrew Dismukes and Martha Kelly. 18+, one-item minimum.
