A 200-seat black box in the basement of a former Davis Square department store, The Rockwell has been Somerville's home for the strange and the funny since 2016 - the same room that housed Boston Baked Theatre in the '80s and Jimmy Tingle's Off Broadway in the 2000s. It stages more than 500 performances a year and books work it describes as funny, dark, smart and great: touring stand-up hours (Jaboukie Young-White, George Civeris, Matt Goldich, Nate Varrone), clown and character solo shows, sketch, burlesque, live music and fringe theatre, plus a busy slate of clown and comedy-writing workshops. It hosts the annual Boston Fringe festival and has been repeatedly voted Boston's best comedy club. Fridays and Saturdays are 21+ unless noted; matinees and Sunday-Thursday shows are generally all ages.
