A New Orleans institution since 1988, The Howlin' Wolf is a locally owned and operated music club in the Warehouse District, named after the legendary bluesman Chester Burnett. After outgrowing its original Fat City space, it moved into the former New Orleans Music Hall on South Peters Street, where the exterior mural by Michalopoulos recreates the city's music history from Louis Armstrong to a Dirty Dozen Brass Band second line. Inside, the hand-carved mahogany bar was salvaged from Al Capone's Lexington Hotel and the black theatre curtains came out of the Orpheum. The main room is general admission with a standing floor; next door, The Den is a smaller room with a full kitchen and 25 beers on tap that hosts comedy, concerts, art showcases and film screenings, and The Porch adds an outdoor stage on the corner of South Peters and St Joseph. Standup runs all week — Comedy Gumbeaux on Thursdays, Comedy Beast on Tuesdays and Piss Yo' Pants Sundays — alongside touring headliners presented by Laugh Life Comedy including Maria Bamford, Brian Posehn and Natalie Cuomo. Harry Connick Jr., Jimmy Buffett, Dr. John, the Foo Fighters, Snarky Puppy and Alison Krauss have all played the stage.
