Milwaukee's largest theatre — a 4,086-seat municipal house on West Kilbourn Avenue that opened in 1909 as the Milwaukee Auditorium and has served as a hub of the city's civic and cultural life ever since. It is owned by the Wisconsin Center District and programmed by the Pabst Theater Group, with the box office on AXS. A century of Milwaukee has come through the room: David Bowie, Sting, Mariah Carey and Dolly Parton have played it, the Radio City Rockettes and the Milwaukee premiere of Disney's The Lion King staged in it, Michelle Obama spoke in it, and Jerry Seinfeld, Ron White and Chris Tucker have all headlined stand-up bills here. Thorsten Lindberg's historical murals line Miss Lizzie's, the lobby bar, and the Grand Rotunda beyond it; the house itself is known for its acoustics and can be scaled down to roughly 2,500 seats for more intimate shows.
