Opened in 1928 on Broadway in midtown Kansas City, the Uptown Theater is the city's only "atmospheric" theater — an interior designed by John Eberson as a romantic Mediterranean courtyard, under a ceiling of twinkling stars, drifting clouds and mechanical flying birds. Bob Hope played the opening bill, and Will Rogers, Shirley Temple, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers passed through in the decades after. The room went dark in 1989, came back through a $15 million restoration, sits on the National Register of Historic Places and has been ranked among Pollstar's top 100 theaters in the world. Independent promoter Mammoth took it over in 2022 and books it as a full-house concert hall — permanent seating in the balcony and rear main floor, tables and standing room up front — with touring standup (Matteo Lane, Dusty Slay, Nephew Tommy) alongside the music calendar. The complex also holds the intimate Encore next door plus the Valentine, Broadway and Cabaret rooms; tickets are sold only through Ticketmaster or the Uptown box office, and parking across Broadway is free.
