The Saenger Theatre is downtown Pensacola's 1,641-seat historic performing arts center, opened in 1925 on South Palafox Place as a vaudeville and silent-movie house for the Saenger chain of Southeastern theatres. Shuttered in 1975 and saved from demolition by the citizen group Friends of the Saenger, it reopened in 1981, gained a Grand Lobby in 1995, and had its original paint and decor restored in a $15 million renovation and expansion in 2009. It still houses the Robert Morton theatre pipe organ installed in 1925 and restored in 2014. Known locally as the Grand Dame of Palafox, the Saenger hosts touring Broadway, the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, Pensacola Opera and ballet alongside a steady drip of national touring standup - headliners on the current calendar include Daniel Tosh, Jo Koy, Ali Siddiq, Jeff Arcuri, Rodney Carrington, Henry Cho, Nephew Tommy, Amber Autry and Aries Spears.
