The Orpheum Theatre is downtown Sioux City's historic main stage — a 2,650-seat house at 528 Pierce Street, designed by the Chicago firm Rapp & Rapp and opened in 1927 as a stop on the Orpheum Circuit. Built as an opulent vaudeville and moving-picture palace, it was the largest theatre in Iowa at the time, complete with a 21-rank Wurlitzer pipe organ, half-circle boxes, crystal chandeliers and a hand-painted ceiling. Remodeled down to a movie house in the 1970s and 80s and closed in 1992, it was brought back by a roughly $15 million restoration led by the Orpheum Theatre Preservation Project and reopened in 2001 with its original chandeliers and gilded detailing restored. Today it is home to the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and the Broadway At The Orpheum series, and books touring comedy, concerts, ballet and family shows — Jeff Dunham, #IMOMSOHARD, Gary Owen, Robert Plant and Kenny G among them. A clear-bag policy is in effect, and every patron twenty-four months and older needs a ticket.
