The Historic Bakersfield Fox Theater opened on Christmas Day 1930 at the corner of 20th and H in downtown Bakersfield — one of the last of the great Gilded Age movie palaces, designed by Los Angeles architect S. Charles Lee. Saved from the wrecking ball in 1994 by the non-profit Fox Theater Foundation and more than 380 “Save The Fox” donors, the 1,502-seat room still carries its rare Skouras-signature interior: towering gold leaf, polished terrazzo underfoot and a galaxy of stars floating in a neon indigo sky, plus a long-standing reputation for fine acoustics. The Foundation books it as Bakersfield’s main downtown road house alongside the nearby Nile Theater, and the calendar runs wide — touring standup (Fortune Feimster, Fred Armisen, Henry Cho, Becky Robinson, Michael Blaustein), concerts and tribute acts, ballet and mariachi, magic, and a “Cults & Classics” repertory film series back on the big screen. Shows are reserved-seating and all ages — everyone attending needs a ticket regardless of age — and the venue is cashless with a clear-bag policy.
