Opened in September 1922 at the corner of First and Broadway in downtown Wichita, the Orpheum Theatre is the oldest surviving example of John Eberson's proto-atmospheric theatre design — an auditorium built to feel like a Spanish garden under a starlit sky. Originally a 1,700-seat vaudeville house that hosted Harry Houdini, Eddie Cantor, the Marx Brothers, Fanny Brice, Red Skelton and George Burns and Gracie Allen, it now seats roughly 1,300 across orchestra, mezzanine and balcony levels and programs a year-round mix of music, comedy, film and theatre. Touring standup on the current calendar includes Tom Segura, Jeff Arcuri, Henry Cho, Gary Owen, Amber Autry, Charlie Berens and Ari Matti Mustonen. Concessions and a full-service bar are open at most events, with pizza by the slice on movie nights; tickets are sold exclusively through Select-A-Seat and Ticketmaster.
