Opened as a vaudeville palace in 1928 at Main and Beale in downtown Memphis, the Orpheum Theatre is the Mid-South's flagship touring house — crystal chandeliers, gold-leaf accents and ornate 1920s ceilings around a fully modernized 2,300-seat auditorium. It has been the only home of first-run Broadway tours between Nashville, Little Rock, St. Louis and Birmingham since 1977, and the nonprofit Orpheum Theatre Group that runs it programs concerts, dance, film-with-orchestra nights and a named-headliner comedy track alongside year-round arts-education work. A typical season runs from Monty Python's Spamalot, The Great Gatsby and Ballet Memphis's Nutcracker to Stray Cats, Jodeci and Three 6 Mafia, with standup tours like Mojo Brookzz and Matt Mathews in between. The 361-seat Halloran Centre for Performing Arts & Education next door is the Group's second, separately addressed room.
