The Tennessee Theatre is the Official State Theatre of Tennessee — a 1928 Spanish-Moorish movie palace on Gay Street in downtown Knoxville, hailed at its opening as "the South’s most beautiful theatre." Restored and reopened in 2005 after a $25.5 million renovation and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the roughly 1,600-seat house is operated by the non-profit Historic Tennessee Theatre Foundation and books touring concerts, Broadway at the Tennessee runs, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Knoxville Opera, classic films and the free Mighty Musical Monday recitals on its original Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Its stage also draws national stand-up tours — headliners have included Jay Leno, John Mulaney, Jeff Arcuri, Kevin James, Henry Cho, Nate Jackson and Brad Williams.
