The San Jose Civic is downtown San Jose's historic landmark theatre, opened in 1936 in Spanish California Mission style to a design by Binder & Curtis. Across nearly a century it has hosted generations of unforgettable performances — The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, The Grateful Dead, The Beach Boys and Duke Ellington among them — and The Who launched their first headlining U.S. tour here in 1968. Beyond music, the Civic has staged boxing, dance, political events, cultural celebrations and family entertainment. A renovation completed in 2012 blended the room's historic character with modern seating, technology, accessibility and guest amenities; today its flexible floor plan seats about 2,850 and moves between general admission and reserved configurations, which is why downtown books it for touring standup, Latin music and large-scale concerts alike. It is run by Team San Jose alongside the California Theatre, the Center for the Performing Arts and the Montgomery Theater.
