Opened on January 19, 1927 as the sixty-first house in the Saenger brothers' Southern theatre chain, Mobile's Saenger Theatre is a 1,921-seat French-Renaissance landmark designed by architect Emile Weil — Poseidon cast above the front entrance, Dionysus over the proscenium, a grand marble staircase and sea-green, maroon and gold plasterwork inside. Billed at its dedication as "Alabama's Greatest Showplace," it is today downtown Mobile's main room for touring entertainment, operated by Oak View Group alongside Regions Arena and the Mobile Convention Center, and the home stage of the Mobile Symphony Orchestra and Mobile Ballet. Touring standup plays the room regularly — Jo Koy, Eddie B and Arnez J. are all on the current calendar.
