Hoyt Sherman Place

Hoyt Sherman Place is a 1,252-seat historic theater in Des Moines' Sherman Hill neighborhood, completed by the Des Moines Women's Club in 1923 and restored in 2003. The classic Victorian room — 776 seats on the main floor under a 476-seat balcony — is known for its acoustics and its opulent interior, and its calendar mixes touring standup with concerts, dance and spoken word; recent bills include John Crist, Gary Owen, Dusty Slay, Jeff Arcuri, Becky Robinson and Derrick Stroup. The theater shares its campus with the original Hoyt Sherman mansion and Des Moines' first public art gallery, and the 2020 Center for Artists and Education next door. All ages, free parking in the lot just east of the building, beer and wine at every ticketed performance, and doors typically one hour before showtime.
