A 1926 movie palace in the heart of downtown Monterey, the Golden State Theatre was designed by the San Francisco firm Reid & Reid around a medieval Spanish theme — wrought iron chandeliers, tapestries, gold ornamentation and heraldic shields, with an auditorium built to give the impression of an open-air courtyard, a rarity among California theaters. The restored room on Alvarado Street seats about 1,000 and is the Monterey Peninsula's main stage for touring comedy and music: recent and upcoming bills include Brian Regan, Nimesh Patel, Randy Feltface, Danny Gonzalez, Aries Spears, Vir Das and Michelle Wolf, and the house has hosted Jerry Seinfeld, Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt, Caifanes and The Beach Boys over the years. Tickets are sold through Etix; when a show hasn't sold out in advance, the box office also sells at the door an hour before door time.
