Opened in 1919 on Church Street in Norfolk, the Attucks Theatre was financed, designed and built by African Americans — the work of architect Harvey Johnson — and became known as the "Apollo of the South," hosting Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and Nat King Cole. It went dark in 1953, was restored by the City of Norfolk and reopened in 2004, and the venue's own pages note its National Historic Landmark designation. Today the roughly 620-seat room is one of seven City of Norfolk venues and Norfolk's main theatre for touring standup and music — recent and upcoming bills include Maria Bamford, Nurse Blake, Stephen Lynch, Jordan Jensen, Becky Robinson and Henry Zebrowski alongside the Attucks Jazz Club series and the Virginia Symphony. Tickets are sold through Ticketmaster and the Scope Arena box office.
