About

Welcome to stand up 101! This course will be an introduction to the experience of stand up comedy- the basics of joke writing, the habit of turning your thoughts and/or life experiences into material, and how to develop and refine a set over time. Whether you're a complete novice or a performer of another discipline, stand up is a singular and worthwhile skill to develop: improve your confidence in public speaking, learn how to connect with an audience, and develop your creative muscles. $300 (plus tax) for the 7 Week course meeting on Mondays with a final performance at the Wednesday Laughs On Tap Open Mic. Limited to 8 students! A second class will be added based on demand. Note that this course is a writing-intensive workshop that works best in tandem with making time for performances at The Laughing Tap's Wednesday night open mic or one of the many other open mics around town.  Ensure that you are available for all seven class dates on Mondays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm! Oct 26 Nov 2 Nov 9 Nov 16 Nov 30 Dec 7 Dec 14 Performance of your workshop set on Wednesday, December 16th at 8pm. All classes and final performance at The Laughing Tap, 761 N Jefferson St., Milwaukee, WI 53202 About the instructor Duncan Carson: Duncan Carson is a Milwaukee-based comedian that's been performing across the country for over sixteen years. He's been on festivals like Moontower, Limestone, and Hell Yes Fest, was a Stand Up NBC Semifinalist, and co-hosted SURE THING, one of the best weekly shows in Austin, TX for more than a decade- he also co-founded SURE THING RECORDS, an indie comedy record label where he helped produce 20 full-length albums, include his own debut album "Pointless" in 2018. Though stand up is his first love, he's also a writer, and a musician that once played drums for an official SXSW act, and has dabbled in improv and sketch. Equal parts silly and deeply sincere, he's been hailed as "the closest thing to a stand up philosopher you could meet," which just means he sounds really stoned sometimes.
